This will be your go-to guide for ethical and sustainable lingerie! But first, let’s discuss why sustainable lingerie is important in the first place…

Why Do We Need Sustainable Lingerie?

It’s no secret that the brand that has dominated the lingerie market is problematic. Between a 2020 Times investigation uncovering Victoria’s Secret “entrenched culture of misogyny, bullying and harassment” to Hulu’s exposing Angels and Demons docuseries to their lack of supply chain environmental impact accountability.

But Victoria’s Secret isn’t alone. Many lingerie brands have their issues when it comes to perpetuating unrealistic beauty standards, relying on synthetic fossil fuel-derived materials like polyester, and lacking supply chain accountability.

While some relatively big name lingerie brands are centering inclusive marketing, we still have to ask questions like: what are their products made from and how are they made? who is making those bras and are they being paid fairly and working in safe conditions?

Because if a lingerie brand is claiming to empower women, they must also consider the women sewing their undergarments.

What Is Sustainable Lingerie?

So enough of the doom and gloom here! Let’s talk about what sustainable lingerie entails and what an ethical alternative to Victoria’s Secret might look like.

Because the fact is that there are a number of incredible eco-minded and ethical lingerie brands out there doing things better! While brands might not meet all of this criteria, these are some general aspects to keep in mind:

Eco-Conscious Materials

Most lingerie is made from polyester and nylon (synthetic plastic fibers). On the other hand, sustainable lingerie materials might include natural fabrics like organic cotton and Tencel or repurposed materials like deadstock fabrics and vintage trims.

Production Size

No matter how eco-conscious the material is, it’s still unsustainable if a brand is overproducing and wasting those garments! An eco-friendly lingerie brand would produce intentionally in small batches, use pre-order or made-to-order models, or have seasonless collections that they won’t toss as soon as the month is over.

Ethical Production

People are part of sustainability too. Look for brands with transparent and socially responsible production practices.

This could include owning their own factory/workshop, developing close relationships with their suppliers, using certified vetted factories, and importantly: paying those supplier factories enough money so that they can pay workers living wages.

Other Sustainability Practices

Some other ways an eco-friendly and ethical lingerie brand might prioritize sustainability include: using renewable energy to power their operations, using zero waste design practices, giving back to their community, and using eco-minded packaging.

Where To Find Sustainable and Ethical Lingerie

From elegant lace bras to bold bodysuits, these ethical and sustainable lingerie labels have it all — and they do it without keeping dirty secrets.

The post These Are The Best 2023 Black Friday and Cyber Week Sales From Sustainable Brands appeared first on Conscious Life & Style.

]]>
It’s not easy shopping consciously during the holiday season — especially during Cyber Week. It’s a time of year notorious for overconsumption, impulse buys, and purchases that are bound for the landfill just months (or even days) later.

But I also don’t believe that sustainable living just looks ONE way. These sustainable and ethical Black Friday discounts can be a way to access better products for more affordable prices.

If sustainable living to you looks like boycotting Cyber Week, go for it. But if it looks like getting a few things at prices more in line with your budget during this week, then I don’t think that is “wrong” or automatically “unsustainable”. The key is to avoid overbuying and to support places aligned with your values!

Here are some things to keep in mind to engage with Cyber Week and Black Friday more sustainably!

1. A “deal” isn’t a “deal” if we’re buying things we won’t actually use and enjoy long-term (it’s easy to get caught up in the thrill of a deal and buy something that we totally wouldn’t have bought otherwise — been there, done that!)

2. Our whole platform is about challenging overconsumption, but if we want to intentionally purchase some ethical clothing or eco-friendly gifts, these sale days can be a great opportunity to support conscious brands more affordably.

3. It’s worth asking some additional questions and taking some extra time to make these purchasing decisions because the dopamine hit of a good deal can skew our decision-making abilities!

4. If the whole Cyber Week affair stresses you out or you’re feeling pressured to buy more than you originally intended, know that you can step out at any time. Turn off your notifications and get outside and/or spend time with loved ones! You do not need to buy ALL (or any) of your holiday gifts during this week.

But if you’re ready to make a mindful investment in something for yourself, or have a long list of gifts and you want some support in shopping small and consciously, check out this list of the best sustainable and ethical Black Friday and Cyber Week deals going on. Plus, we featured some companies opting out of deals and doing donations instead.

Transparency note: we only feature brands that meet high standards for sustainability we love, that we think you’ll love too. Some of these links are affiliate links, meaning if you purchase via these links we may earn a commission, which helps us continue this site. Thanks for your support!

The post 18 Organic and Sustainable Underwear Brands You’ll Be Comfy & Confident In appeared first on Conscious Life & Style.

Organic and sustainable underwear is a growing demand as the concern is rising about the impact of harmful dyes and synthetic fabrics on our skin. Thankfully, there are quite a few sustainable underwear brands in the marketplace that are providing more ecological options for conscious consumers looking for underwear they can feel confident choosing for themselves and their families.

What fabrics should we look for in a sustainable underwear brand?

Look for materials like organic cotton — preferably GOTS-certified cotton as this is the highest standard for organic fibers — hemp, or Tencel, which is a silky fiber made from responsibly sourced wood pulp using a closed-loop process. All of the brands included in this guide use one or two of these fibers! Many brands might use a small percentage of a stretchy synthetic like spandex for added comfort, but typically this will be a very small percentage.

Price Range Key: $ = Under $15 | $$ = $15 – $30 | $$$ = $30+ per piece

Note that this guide includes affiliates and partners. As always, I only choose to include brands that meet Conscious Life & Style standards for ethics and aesthetics!

PACT is a sustainable, ethical underwear brand with 100% organic cotton underwear made in Fair Trade-certified factories.

Looking at the prices of eco-minded and ethical fashion brands, you might be wondering: where can I find affordable sustainable clothing?

The first thing to consider is that the most sustainable garments are the ones already hanging in your closet! Wearing what you already have more is the best way to reduce your clothing footprint.

Slow fashion is a mindset and there are so many ways to practice slow fashion without spending money or buying new garments.

And when you do want a new-to-you piece, check out your local thrift store or one of these online secondhand shops first! Shopping pre-loved is a great way to find affordable sustainable clothes.

That said, shopping secondhand is not always accessible or doesn’t always offer what you need, so there may be times that you want to buy a new piece — but without breaking the bank.

While responsible fashion brands will never hit the questionably low prices of fast fashion brands (there’s no way a brand is paying living wages when they charge $5 for a t-shirt), these conscious brands certainly have fair prices for what they are offering.

The reality is that it does typically cost more to source materials in an ecologically responsible way and it will be more expensive to pay garment workers living wages. Consciously-made garments don’t have to cost a fortune, but they will cost more than a latte.

Affordability also depends on how many garments we are buying and how often. For example, while a single garment from a fast fashion brand may be cheaper than one from a slow fashion brand, if you are constantly doing fast fashion hauls the price tags add up.

Slowing down consumption habits will most likely save money in the long run. While garments from slow fashion brands won’t be considered cheap in comparison to fast fashion, practicing the ethos of fewer, better things, and considering cost-per-wear, will make them more affordable.

The post 15 Sustainable Sweaters To Keep You Cozy and Comfy appeared first on Conscious Life & Style.

]]>
Cozy sweaters are the cornerstone of any cool-weather wardrobe — make it a conscious choice with our curation of sustainable sweaters.

Most of the conventionally available sweaters are made from cheap acrylic fibers that not only give you the ghastly static cling but are actually made from non-biodegradable plastic. Since sweaters are those one-and-done investments you’ll hardly consider replacing for years to come, we suggest making them an eco-friendly natural and/or recylced fabric choice instead.

With this in mind, we’ve rounded up some fabulous—and totally snuggle-worthy—options to help you stay warm in some serious style. Ranging from turtlenecks, crewnecks, cardigans, and a lot more, all you have to do is just add a fireplace and a steaming hot cup of cocoa, and we’re good to go.

Where To Find Eco-Friendly Sweaters

Note that the guide contains partners and affiliates. As always, we only feature brands that meet strict criteria for sustainability we love, that we think you’ll love too!

In terms of sustainability, the creation of ‘waste’ is one aspect that fashion brands (and in turn, the environment) would be better off without. But until a winning solution is found, some brands are turning to deadstock fabric as a means to divert textile waste from landfills to create clothes that are a far cry from anything mass-produced — and we’ve found 15 brands who are doing just that. But first, let’s clarify some of the terminology.

What Are Deadstock Fabrics?

In economics, ‘deadstock’ is a term often used to describe inventory that hasn’t been sold and is unlikely to sell in the future.

Similarly, fabric that is considered deadstock is unsold or unused fabric. It is often a by-product from brands who’ve ordered excess fabrics (perhaps to meet production minimums or as a result of overestimating product demand) or from textile mills left with surplus fabrics (this could happen after canceled orders, changed orders — like if the brand decides it wants a different color fabric — or quality defects).

Deadstock fabric can also be obtained from factory scraps or off-cuts and even mills that possess fabrics that failed quality control during the process of production. All of these may be considered pre-consumer sources of deadstock.

Whereas, post-consumer deadstock fabric refers to discarded, damaged and worn-out clothing that has the potential to be reused or recycled.

What Is Deadstock Clothing?

Deadstock clothing is made by brands that use either pre-consumer or post-consumer (or both) forms of textile waste to create new garments. An economically sound resource for smaller and independent labels, deadstock fabric is often cheaper to buy and almost always has no minimum order quantity. (A major benefit for brands that want to produce in small batches!)

It should be noted that some brands that claim to make clothes from deadstock fabric may only use a small percentage of it in their entire range, especially since deadstock can have design limitations. So, it’s worth looking further into any deadstock claims made by brands, most importantly, from larger brands.

Is Deadstock Fabric Sustainable?

Deadstock fabric isn’t without its flaws. Critics point out that deadstock is not the most effective solution to the fashion industry’s overproduction and subsequent waste problem.

For starters, deadstock material can come from factories and mills that intentionally overproduce textiles and sell them to ‘jobbers’ (aka distributors of deadstock fabric). And these jobbers (middlemen) have built a profitable business around selling deadstock fabric, which in turn perpetuates the toxic cycle of overproduction.

However, as Natasha Halesworth of the rework brand The Consistency Project pointed out in a Conscious Style Podcast episode, “There is excess that is almost required anytime you’re producing anything because there are minimums when you make things or make fabrics or anything custom. There’s always going to be a little bit of excess, that we’ll always have to work with…

So there are other types of deadstock that aren’t related to the really high overproduction that we hear about in these like fashion horror stories. Because most times, those garments or fabrics are actually proprietary and destroyed by these brands. That is a huge problem.

Other brands don’t even get to reuse it, because they’re like, well, I don’t want this particular print being made by anyone else. Therefore, we’re going to destroy it in unsustainable ways, and no one will even know it ever exists. That is what’s happening with a lot of technical deadstock.

Another concern about deadstock is that designers cannot always identify what exactly their deadstock fabric is composed of. So, these fabrics could be made from poorly made synthetics that were dyed using toxic dyes and finishes — an obvious problem in our efforts towards holistic sustainability in the fashion industry.

Consumers should also be wary of greenwashing tactics from brands that are quick to label themselves as zero-waste or attribute the use of deadstock fabric as their sole sustainable initiative.

An honest zero-waste brand would apply other waste-reduction methods in their operations too. And most of all, truthfully disclose how their deadstock materials were obtained.

As Natasha Halesworth pointed out, “The reason why I think there is confusion is because we see a brand that produces new clothing advertising their stuff and saying, oh we use deadstock, sustainable materials — and that’s it. There’s like no talk about well, what does that even mean?

Like did you get this fabric from another designer? There was no communication, no narrative. And that’s really a huge issue. Even if a brand is using deadstock, well, what kind of deadstock? Where are you actually doing that is sustainable?

That being said, using deadstock fabric can often be more sustainable than making use of virgin materials since it already exists, uses fewer resources, and therefore can carry a lower carbon footprint.

To help you identify sustainable deadstock clothing, we found 15 green-minded brands that are putting in a genuine effort at turning deadstock fabric into some stylish clothing that won’t have you looking like you’ve worn a patchwork quilt!

1. Christy Dawn

Honoring mother earth is at the very core of everything Christy Dawn does as a brand. One of their noteworthy pursuits is a farm-to-closet initiative that they’re working on in collaboration with Oshadi Collective, a textile company in Southern India to create sustainable clothing from regenerative textiles.

Using deadstock fabrics is yet another way in which the brand contributes to their overarching goal of caring for mother nature by giving cast-off fabrics a second life. Each style within their deadstock collection is limited, with pieces often being limited to only one or two of a kind — making each piece feel extraordinarily unique.

In an effort to abide by a zero-waste policy, Bastet Noir runs on a strictly made-to-order business model to ensure no inventory is left behind.

They also operate on a made-to-order model to help them create only what is needed.

Tencel is an increasingly popular eco fiber that conscious fashion brands — and even big brands looking to clean up their supply chains — are using to create everything from Tencel underwear and bras to Tencel clothing and scarves. (And, there are many eco-home brands now making Telcel bedsheets!

So, you may have seen Tencel listed in the fabrics of your favorite sustainable fashion brand, but are wondering what exactly Tencel is and what it’s made from — and what about the fiber makes it an eco choice.

What is Tencel?

Tencel refers to the TENCEL™ brand of Lyocell and Modal fibers created by the Lenzing Group. Lenzing is an Austrian company with innovative sustainable fibers sourced from wood that also creates Lenzing EcoVero™ and Veocel™.

What is Tencel made from?

Tencel is a cellulose fiber made from the pulp of sustainably-sourced wood from FSC-certified forests.

Is Tencel sustainable?

No fiber is perfect, but Tencel is generally regarded as an environmentally friendly option. The fiber has a lighter impact than many other fabrics, especially when compared to other cellulosic fabrics, like viscose, which can be made from pulp that is unsustainably sourced from ancient or endangered forests.

In addition to being produced from responsibly sourced renewable raw materials, Tencel is produced in a closed-loop process that recycles the water used and recovers more than 99% of the solvents used. If you want to get into the nitty-gritty, Lenzing breaks down their production process in more detail.

The cons: Besides the use of chemicals, one environmental-related pitfall of Tencel is that, just like other cellulose fibers, it requires a lot of energy to produce. The Lenzing Group has adopted a “biorefinery concept” where their pulp plants use bioenergy derived from the wood after the pulp has been extracted for the fibers. One of their plants even uses 100% bioenergy for running their operations.

However, at other pulp production facilities that aren’t integrated with Lenzing, fossil fuels are the primary energy source.

That said, Lenzing is on a path towards net-zero emissions by 2050 and has committed to the Science-Based Targets initiative with a plan to improve efficiency and renewable energy use to reduce emissions and then to offset any unavoidable emissions.

In short: TENCEL™ Lyocell and Modal fibers are preferred choices — and certainly should be prioritized when considering cellulose fabrics. However, Tencel is not without its environmental impacts and so we should continue to choose quality clothing (and other products) to ensure that they’re built to last.

Alright, so now that you have an understanding of what Tencel is, let’s talk about the best conscious fashion brands to find high-quality Tencel clothing!
