This is your go-to guide to sustainable bedding, featuring over 30 eco-friendly bedding brands with organic cotton, TENCEL™ Lyocell, hemp, and linen sheets, comforters, duvets, duvet covers, mattress toppers, and more.

This guide to brands is separated by bedding material, so before we dive into the guide, let’s talk about each type of fabric!

Organic Cotton:

Cotton is a natural fiber — but that doesn’t make it eco-friendly. Growing the cotton crop gobbles up 16% of the world’s insecticides (that’s out of the total pesticides used for food and fiber production combined) while it’s grown on just 2.5% of the world’s land. Organic cotton, on the other hand is free of synthetic pesticides and is never genetically modified. (Just like organic food!) And when we’re talking about bed sheets that we’re getting up close and personal with, we want that stuff to be clean!

When shopping for organic cotton sheets, look for the GOTS-certified seal. That label, which stands for Global Organic Textile Standard, is the highest certification an organic fiber can achieve. Not only does GOTS mean that the cotton crop was grown organically, but it ensures that the entire product was manufactured in a socially and environmentally-friendly way.

Linen:

There are lots of reasons to love linen. Linen is more durable and dries faster than cotton, plus it doesn’t pill easily, and is temperature regulating (making linen the perfect fabric for year-round sheets that will keep you cool in warm months and warm in cooler months!)

And flax, the plant that linen is made from, requires very few (if any) chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Though conventional linen is generally preferred over conventional cotton, organic linen takes it up even one notch higher! Again, GOTS is the certification to look for when shopping for organic linen sheets, though you typically have to pay a significant premium for organic linen. (Want to bring linen into other parts of your life? Take a look at this guide for linen clothing brands.)

TENCEL™ Lyocell:

TENCEL™ Lyocell is a silky smooth fabric that’s made from the wood pulp of eucalyptus trees sourced from responsibly-managed forests. This pulp is turned into fabric using a closed loop production process in Austria by the brand Lenzing. This fiber is breathable, soft to the touch, absorbent, and gentle yet durable. Read more about TENCEL™ here.

Hemp:

Hemp is a hero when it comes to sustainable fibers. Not only does hemp grow super quickly, but it’s hearty and doesn’t require much water to grow. Not to mention, on the same amount of land, you can grow 250% more hemp than cotton and 6 TIMES more fiber than flax. Oh, and there isn’t even currently a known genetically modified hemp crop!

That said, hemp bedding is still not as widely available as the other materials on this list, and tends to lean on the more expensive side.

Brands included in this guide are partners or affiliates. As always all brands featured in guides on Conscious Life & Style meet high standards for sustainability and are brands I believe in!

The post The Top 12 Non-Toxic and Eco-Friendly Pillows for a Safe Slumber appeared first on Conscious Life & Style.

]]>
People are particular about their pillows — just like our mattress, a good pillow determines whether or not we have a great night’s sleep. Unfortunately, many pillows are made from toxic chemicals and synthetic materials — chemicals that are potentially cancer causing and have been linked to hormone disruption. Thankfully, there are a number of brands creating non-toxic and eco-friendly pillows that you can feel good about.

Whether you’re looking for a travel pillow, body pillow, or sleep pillow, one of the eco-friendly pillow brands below is bound to have what you’re looking for.

What Goes Into an Eco-Friendly Pillow?

When deciding if a pillow is sustainable, transparency is key. In general, if sourcing, materials, or production methods are unclear, the company is most likely not a sustainable one.

A sustainable pillow will be made from eco-friendly, non-toxic materials. This means no harmful chemicals or synthetic materials. The materials used will be sustainable and responsibly sourced, such as organic cotton and natural dye.

Sustainable pillows, and brands, will most likely have one or more of the certifications listed below. These certifications verify that the materials and production methods a company is using comply with trusted global standards.

Additionally, sustainable pillow companies will produce their products in a way that doesn’t involve exploitative labor. They will implement production methods that are eco-friendly and ethical – benefitting both their workers and the planet.

Non-Toxic Pillow Materials to Look for — and Materials to Avoid

Below you’ll find some of the most common and sustainable materials to look for when it comes to eco-friendly pillows:

 • GOTS-certified organic cotton
 • Sustainably sourced organic kapok fiber
 • GOLS organic certified latex
 • Responsibly sourced, organic or Woolmark certified wool
 • Natural, ethically sourced down
 • BPA-free recycled PET
 • Eucalyptus Lyocell
 • Sustainable hemp
 • AAA grade 100% long-strand mulberry silk
 • Sustainably sourced bamboo
 • Buckwheat hulls
 • Natural dyes
 • No chemical fire retardants

If a pillow has any of the following materials, it’s most likely not sustainable:

 • Synthetic polyurethane foam or memory foam
 • Chemical flame retardants or harmful chemicals
 • Synthetic materials or proprietary blends where the full materials are not disclosed
 • Synthetic latex
 • Polyester

Certifications for Eco-Friendly Pillows

Certifications are a great way to ensure a brand isn’t greenwashing. If a company has one or more of the following certifications, they are most likely a sustainable and trustworthy brand.

eco-INSTITUT certified: A German certification that measures a material’s emission level and verifies if it is responsibly sourced.

FLOCERT: An Independent global certifier that ensures a company truly meets fair-trade and other leading sustainability certification standards.

Made Safe: A U.S. certification that verifies products are safe for everyday use.

Greenguard Gold: Greenguard Gold Certified products must meet a low chemical emission level that ensures it is safe to use.

OEKO-TEX: OEKO-TEX offers six different certifications that measure if various materials and textiles are free of harmful substances and safe for use.

FSC Certified: A US certification that verifies materials are sustainably sourced from responsible forests.

GOTS-Certified: The Global Organic Textile Standard is the leading certification for any organic fibers. It ensures that your material is up to this standard, no matter where it’s produced.

GOLS-Certified: Global Organic Latex Standard verifies that latex is 100% organically grown and natural.

USDA Organic: This US certification ensures that materials like wool or cotton are grown without chemicals and that meet a specific standard.

There are only a few material items that are truly essential for everyone — and mattresses are one of those items. That being said, picking the perfect mattress is not always an easy task.

Everyone wants to get a good night’s sleep, but choosing conventional mattresses could do more harm than good. Many mattresses are made from synthetic materials that are hazardous to our health and the environment.

A solution for that? Choosing a sustainable mattress instead. Below we’ve included 10 eco-friendly mattress brands with a minimal footprint that will ensure a healthy, and restful, night’s sleep.

[Looking for bed frames too? Check out this guide.]

What Makes a Mattress Sustainable?

There are numerous factors that make a mattress sustainable. Sustainable mattress companies will use eco-friendly production methods and ethical business practices, including paying their workers a fair wage and using lower impact and organic materials.

When trying to decide if a mattress brand is sustainable, it’s important to look for transparency. Each company should include what materials they use, as well as how and where they manufacture their products.

It’s always a good sign if the company manufactures locally, as this cuts down on their carbon emissions and typically ensures more transparency. It’s also a great sign if they own their own factories, or note that they do audits of the factories they work with, to ensure ethical working conditions and fair pay.

Sustainable brands will take extra steps to lower or offset their carbon emissions. They may also donate to or partner with various organizations, typically centered on environmental issues.

Another thing to consider before purchasing a mattress is its longevity. Mattresses built to last a lifetime are always a more sustainable choice than conventional mattresses that wear out after a few years and end up in a landfill. All of the mattresses listed below have 25 years to lifetime guarantees!

Mattress Materials to Look For (and Materials to Avoid)

Sustainable mattresses will be made from natural, non-toxic, and sustainably sourced materials, ideally with certifications.

Some great eco-friendly materials to look out for are:

 • GOTS Certified Organic Cotton
 • Sustainably sourced wool
 • Natural Dunlop or Talalay Latex, ideally GOLS certified or OEKO- standard
 • Non-toxic, water-based adhesive

Avoid companies that use synthetic materials, plastics, flame retardants, or other toxic chemicals. This includes conventional foam, rubber, and synthetic latex, which should be avoided at all costs.

Eco-Friendly Mattress Certifications to Know

When trying to determine if a mattress company is truly sustainable, look for proper credentials that backup their claims, like the following certifications:

GOTS-Certified: GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard. This is the leading certification for any organic fibers and ensures that your material is up to this standard, no matter where it’s produced.

GOLS-Certified: GOLS means Global Organic Latex Standard. This certification ensures that it’s 100% organically grown natural latex and approved raw materials.

Cradle to Cradle Gold-Certified: This is a global certification that ensures a product is made in a safe, responsible, and circular way.

Greenguard Gold: Any product that is Greenguard Gold Certified means it meets a low chemical emission standard so it’s safe to use.

Eco-Institut Certified: A German certification that ensures mattresses are low-pollutant and have low chemical emissions.

Made Safe: A U.S. certification that ensures products are safe for everyday use.

Rainforest Alliance Certified: Any product with this certification means it was produced in a way that is socially, economically, and environmentally responsible, particularly as it relates to forests and the climate.

OEKO-TEX: OEKO-TEX offers six different certifications that test various materials and textiles to measure that they are free of harmful substances and safe for use.

FSC Certified: This US certification means that materials are sustainably sourced from responsible forests.

Linen home decor is having a moment, but the fabric is more than just a trend — there are many benefits to linen, and as a durable fabric that only gets softer with age, linen home goods can be with you for many years to come!

The Benefits of Linen in Your Home

When it comes to home textiles, linen is a preferable fabric thanks to its thermal regulating properties (perfect for bedding & blankets) and its lived-in feeling (instantly makes a space feel more ‘home-y”!).

Plus, natural fibers are typically better when trying to keep your indoor air healthy and safe. That said, not all natural fabrics are created equal because they can still be grown with pesticides and be colored with toxic dyes or treated with potentially hazardous chemicals.

Look for certifications like Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex that vets products to ensure they are free of harmful substances. Not only is this good for you and your home, but it’s better for the outside environment as well.

Linen can also be a more eco-conscious fabric choice than conventional cotton and synthetic fabrics like polyester.

The plant used in linen, flax, often “comes close to the organic standard without trying” according to the CFDA, and in many cases can be cultivated with natural rainfall alone.

Where to Find Linen Home Goods

I’m excited to partner with Sauths for this guide because they have a beautiful selection of linen home decor and home goods. And their linen products are Oeko-Tex certified and all responsibly-made in small batches locally in Lithuania at a family-owned production house.

This factory uses geothermal heating, a clean self-renewable heating method that doesn’t release any harmful substances, to minimize their carbon footprint too!

Taking responsibility for their supply chain, every person involved in Sauths’ production process earns fair wages and has good working conditions and a safe environment. Sauths ensures that the high working standards set by the European Union are being met through regular third-party audits.

Another highlight of Sauths is that they have a zero waste mindset and have no production waste. Larger scraps are upcycled into other textile products such as towels, hair bands, and bags while small pieces that aren’t suitable for textile items are recycled into other types of products.

And this sustainable mindset is ingrained in Sauths company culture too — a large proportion of Sauths factory team members commute by bicycle to work!

Linen Bedding

Linen is such a wonderful fabric choice for bedding because it has natural thermal regulating properties, which keep you cool in hotter weather and cozy in colder weather.

The fabric is also more breathable than other common bedding materials like cotton and polyester blends.

There’s nothing dreamier than an earthy-hued linen duvet! This one from Sauths is available in Twin through California King for US customers and Single through Super King for EU and UK-based customers. Plus, it’s breathable, so it’ll keep you cozy without making you feel sweaty.
